Mr. Edgar EC Charles
His Life’s Journey.
October 20, 1930 was the day God set aside for the birth of Edgar E.C. Charles, Jr. to the late Edgar Charles, Sr. and Hattie Stitt Carter in the Star City, Arkansas. E.C was the baby of the family and was raised on farms in the Grady and Star City areas where he cultivated his love for the land which would later in life become his passion and career.
E.C. moved to Sherrill, Arkansas, at the age of 9 years old with his family and there he received his early public school education. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and united with the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. J.L. Lawson. E.C. took his convent with GOD very seriously and was later ordained a deacon in California and continued to execute his duties throughout his church affiliations.
Upon moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, he united with the Holy Cross Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. G.H. Turner where he served and could be found every Sunday morning “quoting” memorized scripture chapters and leading songs in the men’s choir until he moved back home and re-united with New Salem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Clark Thomas.
In 1951, he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in search of better opportunities. There he found work in plants and factories to provide for his growing family. Later, he met and married Dorothy in Minnesota, and the couple moved to Los Angeles, California.
E.C and Dorothy’s love and marriage withstood the test of time for over 30 years until the Lord called her home.
In addition to factory work, E.C. owned and operated his own lawn service and took extreme PRIDE in providing TOP NOTCH SERVICE to his many clients in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. He prided himself on never being late and always doing the best job he could. “If he didn’t cut your lawn, your lawn wasn’t cut right…”
E.C. was a diehard Lakers and Dodgers fan, loved Dr. Peppers and could watch “Shoot ‘em ups” (Westerns) on TV all day long. Upon retirement to Las Vegas, he found great joy in leading Humanities Class (Bible Study) at the local Martin Luther King Center, where everybody there LOVED “Mr. Charles.”
After the death of his wife Dorothy and sister Earnestine, E.C. told his daughter Betty and his grandchildren Tim and Toya it was time for him to come back home to Arkansas.
E.C. settled in the Trinity Village Retirement Community in Pine Bluff, where he was absolutely LOVED and affectionately called the “CANDYMAN” because of his love for all things sweet.
On December 24, 2019, after expressing he had his house in order, he answered the call of our Savior. With his daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren holding his hands, the angels carried his soul away.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Theotis Remly, Ottis Remly, Miles Johnson, Roosevelt Carter, L.C. Charles, sisters Dorothy Moore, Earnestine Horton and Elizabeth Williams, wife Dorothy Charles, and daughter Glory Ann Groce.
Loving memories of a beautiful life will forever live in the hearts of his children Betty Jean Wallace, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Evelina Cobbs-Miller of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Marguerite (William) Walker of Rosemont, California, his only son Anthony (Clotile) Charles of Chicago, Illinois, grandson (caregiver) Timothy Wallace of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, 11 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
